Boyd kindly agreed to let me take his photo after I spotted him in a cafe and thought "what a wonderful face!" I couldn't believe it when he told me he is 90. In fact, the week after I met him for a cup of tea at his Wellington home, he was heading off skiing with the family at Wanaka. He fully intended join them all on the slopes (it would have been four generations on the snow at once), but he couldn't find his skis, and it turned out his son had taken the bindings off and given them to his daughter to use. So Boyd took that as a sign that perhaps his skiing days were over after all, and he was content just to spend time with the family off piste. Boyd, or Boudewijn as he is properly named, emigrated to New Zealand in 1951 and had a long and successful career in insurance. He was chief executive of Prudential, and was made a Companion of the Order of Merit in the Queens Birthday Honours in 2011. He seems to know pretty much everybody in Wellington, and is still actively involved in all sorts of ventures - he is President of the Anne Frank Travelling Exhibition (he grew up in Nazi-occupied Holland at the same time Anne was writing about her experiences in hiding).
