Michelle and John's autumn wedding at St Arnaud

Check out this spot!! I want to get married all over again so I can do it here. But I'd time the wedding like Michelle and John did, in autumn, because we stopped here on holiday in January and the sandflies were so thick they obscured the view of the lake. Last month they were in hibernation, however, and left us in peace to enjoy this beautiful little wedding beside Lake Rotoiti. There were only 35 guests, and Michelle and John were married by a very dear family friend, Glenys. Add in a couple of stray ducks that wandered into the proceedings, and a rainbow that magically appeared for the family photos, and you had a pretty special occasion. After taking some photos beside the lake and in the beautiful beech forests we returned to the Alpine Lodge, where the guests were treated to the most incredible wedding banquet I have ever seen. The two families between them have an impressive number of hunters and fishermen, and they'd all gone out and bagged an array of New Zealand seafood, game birds and wild game, which was served up tapas-style so that everyone could sample all the treats: whitebait, scallops, hapuka, crayfish, pheasant, duck, wild pork, rabbit, venison.... Michelle's Dad Clive had made several trips to the lodge in the run-up to the wedding, to work with the chefs to get the dishes exactly right, and judging from the standing ovation they nailed it.

Thank you Michelle and John for being so fantastic on the day - it was an awesome end to the wedding season. A big thanks also to Megan McLaren for joining me.
