Phemie wins Bronze medal at Natex 2014

Phemie by the poolThis is one of my favourite images I've ever shot so I'm thrilled to find out that little Phemie (short for Euphemia) has won a Bronze medal in the Open Print section of the PSNZ Canon National Exhibition 2014, run by the Photographic Society of New Zealand. It also won Silver in last year's Epson/NZIPP Iris Awards. Phemie is a delightfully bouncy wee girl and it was SO hard to get her to stand still for a second and not smile for this photo. In the end I achieved it by talking about her recent cough and cold, and how difficult to sleep it can be when you're sick, and how terribly hard that must have been for her. She is mirroring my own expression here - she agreed it was terribly, terribly hard, and gave a couple of weak coughs to prove how ill she had been. :)
