Phoenix Arizona (and Kenny) here I come!

Bit of a shock yesterday to receive an email asking me to come to Phoenix, Arizona on January 13th because I'm a finalist in the Portrait category of the World Photographic Cup! I hadn't even known there were individual awards: in October I had heard from the NZ Institute of Professional Photography to say this image below had been selected to be part of New Zealand's 18-photo entry into the Cup. I didn't know how it all worked and thought we were just now waiting to hear New Zealand's place. After I'd picked myself up from the floor my first thought was well yes, it would be lovely to be at the awards ceremony but of course there's no way that can happen, especially at such short notice and in the middle of wedding season. And then I remembered what Si and Sophie from Bayly and Moore said at the photography workshop I attended recently, about saying yes to opportunities even when there are many obvious stumbling blocks, and my tiny brain started ticking over wildly...

New Zealand also had finalists in three other categories: Paul Daly in Commercial, Richard Wood in Illustrative/Digital Art, and Mike Hollman in Reportage. I'm not sure yet whether the others are going to Phoenix but I hope so! Awards finalists receive a free full-conference pass to the three-day Imaging USA conference (at which Kenny Rogers is putting in a guest appearance! That sealed it for me, naturally), where there'll be a range of top photographers presenting, and a huge expo. So I am now going to shoot weddings on January 10th and 11th, then jump on a 6.45am flight on the 12th (and sleep the whole way over, no doubt). Thanks and love to my ever-supportive whanau for making this happen, and to He of the Magnificent Eyebrows, the lovely, lovely Fred Wotton.
